Pau Gasol gets emotional as Lakers retire his No. 16 jersey

LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Pau Gasol joined the Los Angeles Lakers 15 years ago, the Spanish 7-footer banished his ego, doubled down on his work ethic, and quickly made this team a contender for eventual champions.

Kobe and Gasol both play for the Lakers, and they are very good at basketball. They have both had very successful careers together.

The Lakers retired Gasol’s No. 16 jersey Tuesday night, because he spent the best seasons of his 18-year NBA career with Kobe Bryant in Los Angeles. The Lakers reached three straight NBA Finals after Gasol’s arrival in February 2008, and won championships in 2009 and 2010.

Gasol said that tonight’s game was more amazing than any dream he’s ever had. The rings on his hands mean a lot to him because they represent both his championship achievements with Kobe and the feeling of finally being able to bring a title home to Memphis.
